3 Ways to Save Energy

For approximately 22 million people across the UK, the April energy cap increase has risen from £1,277 to £1,971 for a household on average usage - nearly £700 a year more. This is the highest gas and electricity price cap there has ever been. Whether you’re a homeowner or a tenant, we are all searching for ways to reduce costs and consume energy more sustainably.

Although it’s not possible to make big savings on your gas and electricity payments right now, there are several things you can do to limit the impact. We have 3 useful ways to save energy at home:

  1. Moderating energy use

This might seem like an obvious solution, but keeping track of our energy usage is vital and using it sparingly can help those rising bills. Start by measuring how much gas and electricity you’re using each month. You can do this with a Smart Meter which replaces your existing gas and electricity meters and tells you more about the energy you use in your home. Alongside this, you can implement small changes to your day-to-day:

  • Turn off standby appliances
  • Wash clothes in cold temperatures and dry them outside if you can
  • Install energy-efficient shower heads
  • Switch to LED bulbs and keep them off during the day
  • Consider going solar

 2. Energy-efficient roofing

Is your conservatory harbouring colder temperatures in the winter and warmer in the summer? It’s a clear sign that heat is escaping in the colder months, while solar gain is creating an intense greenhouse effect in the summer.

By installing a solid conservatory roof you can create a room where the climate is moderated perfectly, that is cosy and enjoyable all year round.

With Summit Homecare solid conservatory roofing, your house will be:

  • Cool in the summer
  • Warm in the winter
  • Reduced damp and mould build-up
  • A perfectly moderated climate

Investing in solid, professional roofing will add value to your home, keep those energy bills low and save you money in the long run.

  3. Draught-proof windows and doors

A better-sealed home means you're trapping more warm air inside, thus reducing your reliance on your heating system and saving money as a result. Depending on the type of replacement glass chosen versus pre-existing panes, you could save as much as 50% on energy expenses.

Our quality double-glazed, uPVC windows and doors can help save you money on energy bills as no heat will be lost, making your home (and your pocket) more protected.

6 Summer Upgrades for your Home
16 May, 2022
Stepping into spring, and soon summer, our conservatories are the best places to spend quality time - from relaxing to entertaining guests. The unique space is beautiful, but there are few places in the home where sun glare is more pronounced than in the conservatory. Temporarily dazzling you, sun glare from windows can not only hinder your vision but cause a real problem for your conservatory - a valuable space built to be cherished! Solar gain and its glare create an intense greenhouse effect in the summer. As temperature extremes are likely to be a regular occurrence in the next few years, sun glare can quickly progress from a nuisance to an uncontrolled increase of heat in the home and uncomfortable living conditions. While you can’t turn off the sun, you can equip your conservatory to better handle the damaging effects. Say goodbye to solar glare! Solar glare can be strong enough to block your vision. When the light reflects off surfaces, it becomes polarised and produces a blinding glare, compromising precious eyesight - notably during driving. While sun glare in a conservatory may not cause the same damage, the ultraviolet rays are responsible for more than 80% of damage to carpets and floor rugs, curtains and furnishings. A conservatory with a tiled roof radically reduces any sun glare caused by translucent roofs. Browse on your tablet, do work on your laptop, or watch TV without being blinded by the sun. Our professional solid conservatory roof fitting eliminates solar glare and restores your conservatory space in all its glory. Solar glare solutions At Summit Homecare, we tackle temperature extremes by replacing old glass and polycarbonate roofs which can make your conservatory too hot in the summer - and equally, too cold to use in the winter. The conservatory roof is upgraded with lightweight tiles and a timber frame to create a room usable throughout the whole year. But it’s not just the outside that will look better, the interior is plastered, with a fully-insulated ceiling. So you can resume control of the heat in your home. With Summit Homecare's solid conservatory roofing, your house will be: Cool in the summer Eliminated solar glare Warm in the winter Reduced damp and mould build-up A perfectly moderated climate Find out more about our solid conservatory roofs here: [link] Tips & tricks for solar glare For more immediate relief from sun glare, there are a few simple and effective tricks to ensure that you keep your cool in the dazzling sun. Adding blinds to windows and doors An obvious solution to limit solar glare is adding blinds to windows and doors. Promptly shutting out the light, blinds can restore control of overheating in your conservatory. Anti-glare window film Window film can reduce solar glare by up to 90%, preventing the sun from dazzling you, all without blocking out natural light. Specially developed to filter out the harshest of the sunlight - while reducing the glare - makes for a more pleasant, climate-controlled space. Plants and trees Strategically planting trees in your garden can provide natural shade in your conservatory. Planting around and in front of the window can block out solar glare and provide some much-needed shade to your room. Furniture placement Follow the patterns of sun glare in your conservatory and adapt your indoor space accordingly. Adjust your TV, sofa or workspace so solar glare is less impressive. Solar glare in your conservatory can cause an uncontrolled increase of heat in the home.
